Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. The aunt was on during the night shifts as a nursing assistant so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater in the daytime. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay was taught by her the power of art as an avenue for action. In the same way, her mother was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. DuVernay's dad recalled the civil rights marches on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create the film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma at Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received qualifications in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she became interested in production for television journalism. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the trash belonging to one of the juries. Following her disappointment with journalistic work by the assignments she was handed she decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. In addition to PR, the company established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
